Lifeguard II

The City of Tolleson is seeking individuals interested in joining our team as part-time Lifeguard II. The Lifeguard II maintains a safe, welcoming, and positive environment for patrons using City aquatic facilities and supports daily aquatic program operations. This position monitors pool activities, prevents accidents, performs water rescues and lifesaving procedures, enforces safety rules, and provides excellent customer service. The Lifeguard II also teaches swim lessons and water-safety skills; assists with staff assignments and adequate lifeguard coverage; guides and mentors lifeguards and program participants; supports in-service training; completes water-quality checks, incident reports, and other records; handles admissions or program fees as assigned; and assists with cleaning, equipment, supplies, and other facility operational needs.
Qualifications
A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) equivalent. Experience lifeguarding, teaching swim lessons, directing aquatic activities, or supporting facility operations is preferred but not required. Must possess at time of hire a current American Red Cross and/or StarGuard Lifeguard Elite certification, CPR/AED certification for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid certification, and a Swim Lesson Instructor/Water Safety Instructor, or equivalent certification. Must possess a Fingerprint Clearance Card, pass the required skills test, and maintain all required certifications throughout employment.
Knowledge of:
- Aquatic facility operations, recreational programs, equipment, and services
- Lifeguarding, swim instruction, water safety, and safe working practices
- Water rescue, first aid, CPR/AED, emergency response, and Emergency Action Plans
- Pool rules, applicable safety requirements, and basic water-quality monitoring procedures
- Customer service principles and tactful rule enforcement
- Basic recordkeeping, incident reporting, cash handling, and modern office technology
Skills In:
- Monitoring aquatic activities, recognizing hazards, and preventing accidents
- Acting quickly, calmly, and effectively during emergencies and performing water rescues
- Teaching swim lessons and water-safety skills to participants of varying abilities
- Guiding, mentoring, and providing work direction to lifeguards and program participants
- Supporting staff assignments, lifeguard coverage, in-service training, and daily facility operations
- Providing professional customer service and enforcing rules tactfully and consistently
- Completing reports, maintaining records, performing basic calculations, and handling fees as assigned
- Communicating effectively with patrons, coworkers, and supervisors and exercising sound judgment
Physical Demands
Positions in this class typically require swimming, standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, kneeling, crouching, bending, twisting, seeing, hearing, talking, climbing, and balancing.
Heavy: Exerting 50-100 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10-20 lbs. constantly.
Work may include prolonged exposure to outdoor weather conditions, direct sunlight, heat and extreme temperatures, pool chemicals, noises, regular exposure to water and wet or slippery surfaces and other environmental conditions. Incumbents may also be exposed to emergency situations, distressed or disruptive individuals, and potentially hazardous or threatening conditions.
